Gene Bierbaum

Gene Bierbaum, professor of communications studies emeritus, recently had his book, The Parliamentarian of Tomorrow, published by Xlibris. Bierbaum, who retired from SUNY Cortland in 1992, defines and explains the building blocks of the parliamentary profession. Cynthia J. Benton, Susan K. Stratton and Karen Stearns

Cynthia J. Benton and Susan K. Stratton, Childhood/Early Childhood Education, and Karen Stearns, English, have completed a 10-year assessment of master’s projects in education. Their work has been published in a Fall 2010 article, “Action Research Empowering Teacher Development: Connecting Teacher Reflection, Teaching Effectiveness and Program Change," in the journal Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning.

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, has been appointed to serve as a member of the Cortland City Planning Commission. His appointment was approved by the City Council in November.

Ellen Paterson, Library, has a book review of Dying To Please: Anorexia, Treatment, and Recovery, by Avis Rumney, 2nd ed., McFarland, 2009, published in the December 2009 issue of CHOICE.

Ute Ritz-Deutch

Ute Ritz-Deutch, History Department, presented a conference paper titled “German Colonists in Southern Brazil: Navigating Multiple Identities on the Brazilian Frontier,” at the Tales of Transit International Conference on June 9 in Antwerp, Belgium. The theme of the conference was transatlantic migration.

Henry Steck

Henry Steck, Political Science Department, recently attended the annual conference of the Alliance of Universities for Democracy held at Uludag University in Bursa, Turkey. He presented "Campaigning in Poetry - Governing in Prose: Reflections on President Obama's First Months."

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, gave a talk titled “Inventing Gun Rights: The Supreme Court, the Second Amendment and Incorporation” on March 24 at SUNY Geneseo. Spitzer’s talk was sponsored by Geneseo’s Political Science Department as part of its annual lecture series.

Christopher Latimer and Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, attended the American Political Science Association annual meeting, held Sept. 2-5 in Washington, D.C. Latimer presented a paper titled “Using Presidential Popularity to Understand the Campaigning Relationship Between President Bush and Congressional Republicans: An Examination of Representative Web Sites in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008 Elections,” for a panel on “Presidential Elections in Perspective.” Spitzer chaired a panel on “Early Assessments of the Obama Presidency.”

Denise D. Knight and Noralyn Masselink, English, have had their article, "A Plea for Honest Grades," accepted for publication in the Fall 2009 issue of Focus on Teacher Education.

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, political science, is the author of an article titled, "Why do Americans love guns so much, and does everyone own one?" for a book titled, 20 Questions About America, to be published by the U.S. State Department for distribution around the world. The book brings together essays that address a variety of commonly asked questions about American life of interest to people around the world.
