Cynthia Sarver and Shufang Shi

Cynthia Sarver, English, and Shufang Shi, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, organized a daylong event for school leadership and technology teams to demonstrate incorporating World Wide Web technology into their classrooms. Representatives from approximately 25 school districts from throughout Central New York attended “The 21st-Century Leadership Forum” held May 14 at SUNY Cortland. Sarver and Shi received a Spring 2010 Cortland Regional Professional Development School (CRPDS) mini-grant to organize the day’s activities. More information about CRPDS is available online.

Mark Dodds and Harlan Bigelow

Mark Dodds, Sport Management Department, and Harlan Bigelow, Budget Office, ran the Lake Placid Marathon for Team in Training, a non-profit organization that raises money to fight leukemia. More than 200 people ran the Lake Placid Marathon and Half Marathon on June 13, raising more than $500,000. Bigelow finished third in his age group.  

Jerome O’Callaghan

Jerome O’Callaghan, School of Arts and Sciences, presented a paper at the annual meeting of the North East Academy of Legal Studies in Business (NEALSB) on May 1 in Ithaca, N.Y. The paper, co-authored with Paula O’Callaghan and Rosemary Hartigan, addresses gossip in the workplace with a focus on management and free speech issues. The authors learned recently that they were joint winners of the Best Paper Award at the conference.   

Thomas Hischak

Thomas Hischak, Performing Arts Department, had his play, “The Cardiff Giant,” named as one of the three winners in the 2009 Julie Harris Playwriting Competition sponsored by the Beverly Hills Playhouse. Also, his play “Awakening: The Story of Kip Van Winkle” has been published by Pioneer Drama Service, Inc., Denver, Colo.

Jenn McNamara

Jenn McNamara, Art and Art History Department, is showing a surface design piece at the Brooklyn Art Library for “The Pattern Project” exhibition. The exhibition opens Friday, June 25, at 201 Richards St. #16 in Brooklyn.

Jenn McNamara, Art and Art History Department, has had her woven work from 2009, “Untitled,” accepted into the North American Sculpture Biennial at the Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colo. The international competition, established in 1979, was juried by sculptors Lawrence Argent and John McEnroe as well as curator Michael Chavez. The exhibition will be open from July 16-Aug. 29 with a presentation by the jurors on July 21. 

Brian D. Barrett

Brian D. Barrett, Foundations and Social Advocacy, served as plenary speaker the Sixth International Basil Bernstein Symposium held in July in Brisbane, Australia. Additionally, he assisted in the delivery of several classroom sessions to participants in SUNY Cortland’s Australia Student Teaching Program and was interviewed on Australian national radio regarding the global context of education reform and the impending implementation of Australia’s national curriculum.

Mechthild Nagel

Mechthild Nagel, Philosophy Department and director of the Center for Gender and Intercultural Studies (CGIS), taught a graduate seminar on “Global Feminisms” in June at Fulda University of Applied Sciences in Fulda, Germany.  

Donna Videto, Aimee Greely and Bonni Hodges

Donna Videto, Aimee Greely and Bonni Hodges, Health Department, facilitated discussions on school wellness policies and programs for health and wellness teachers from around the state at a workshop held July 19 at SUNY Cortland. “Achieving Success with Health and Wellness” was funded by the School Health Capacity Building Project: A SUNY Cortland and NYSED Partnership, as part of the five year grant awarded to Hodges and the Health Department to impact systems in school health. Invited speakers presented on the latest instruments and trends for improving school health and wellness to the 30 participants, many of who were SUNY Cortland graduates currently working in the field.

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, has been informed that his article, “Still Saving the Constitution from Lawyers,” has been accepted for publication in the December 2010 issue of the Gonzaga Law Review.
