Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of an article titled, “Flanagan’s Gun Permit, and Mine,” that was published in the New York Daily News on August 31. Spitzer argues that the man who shot a television reporter and cameraman in Virginia likely could not have obtained his gun had he lived in New York.

Kristine Newhall

Kristine Newhall, Kinesiology Department, was invited to co-present a symposium at the Social Justice Through Sport and Exercise Psychology Conference in March. The session was called “More than a Trend: Assessing the Literature on Trans Issues in Sport.”

Lisa Randolph and Tracy Frenyea

Lisa Randolph, Career Services, and Tracy Frenyea, Advisement and Transition, presented a concurrent session at the College Student Personnel Association of New York State conference held on Oct. 5 in Syracuse. “A Collaborative Evolution” reflected on the collaborations between Advisement and Transition, as part of Academic Affairs, and Career Services, as part of Student Affairs. They discussed how the collaboration has evolved from workshops for undeclared students to a one-credit elective course, Major and Career Exploration, co-taught by both offices, and what they learned in the process.

Kyle Cannon

Kyle Cannon, Campus Activities and Corey Union, attended the National Conference of the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities, which was held Feb. 15 to 18 at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in Hershey, Pa. Kyle, in addition to his capacity as advisor to the Student Activities Board delegates, he worked at the conference as an event crew coordinator, leading a group of 28 student volunteers from SUNY Cortland and a number of other colleges and universities who were tasked with assisting session presenters and stamping programs for educational sessions and showcases, handing out conference swag and raffle tickets, and working and setting up the lunch and dinner showcases. In addition, the SUNY Cortland Student Activities Board was bestowed the National Boyd Jones Programming Board of the Year Award for their contributions to the SUNY Cortland campus and the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities community.

Heather Bartlett, Laura Davies, Tim Emerson, Mario Hernandez, Jeff Jackson and Kevin Rutherford, all from the English Department Composition Program, presented together at the SUNY Council on Writing Conference on Sept. 9. Their panel was titled, “Making Changes: Revising a First-Year Writing Curriculum within a Teaching Community.”

David Kilpatrick

David Kilpatrick, Psychology Department, presented a poster titled “The Compensating Dyslexics We Never Hear About: A Multiple Case Study Approach” for the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading. The presentation took place at the society’s annual conference in July in Santa Fe, N.M. 

Ryan Vooris

Ryan Vooris, Sport Management Department, had his article “Development of a Sport Twitter Utilization Scale” published in the Journal of Contemporary Athletics.

Carolyn Bershad

Carolyn Bershad, Counseling and Student Development, has been informed that the Counseling Center has met the criteria for full re-accreditation by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS), the only association that accredits counseling services on university and college campuses. Accreditation by IACS is dependent upon evidence of continuing professional development as well as demonstration of excellence in counseling performance. The office offers individual and group counseling for students, as well as consultation and outreach to the campus community.

Jeremy Pekarek

Jeremy Pekarek, Memorial Library, recently became a Certified Archivist (CA) through the Academy of Certified Archivists. This is a nationally recognized organization that ensures a standard of excellence in historical preservation and access to primary resources and collections. Qualified candidates took a lengthy examination to test their knowledge of seven required domains in archival theory including, (1) appraisal, selection, acquisitions, (2) arrangement and description, (3) reference services and access, (4) preservation, (5) outreach, (6) archival management and (7) ethical and legal responsibilities.  

Mary Gfeller

Mary Gfeller, Mathematics Department and SUNY Cortland Noyce Scholars Kelsey O’Donnell and Robin Tobin presented “Teaching Math Using Culturally Relevant Teaching Strategies” at the National Science Foundation 2014 Noyce NE Regional Conference held in March in Philadelphia, Pa. Perspectives on culturally relevant teaching strategies in teaching secondary math concepts were discussed using examples from real classrooms, including several from O’Donnell and Tobin’s current student teaching placement at Binghamton High School. The presenters explored the various strategies designed to make math more accessible and more meaningful to students.
