Charlotte L. Pass, Literacy Department, co-presented the workshop “A Cluster of Others,” addressing the practice of “othering” and ways to increase student awareness of its enactment at the combined Australian Association of Teachers of English and Australian Literacy Educators Association Annual Conference held July 6 to 9 in Hobart, Australia.
Jaroslava Prihodova
Jaroslava Prihodova, Dowd Gallery, was interviewed by the Cortland Standard about her role as gallery director for an article that was published Monday, April 10 titled “She stays surrounded by art.” It is also available online on the publication’s website (for subscribers only) and promoted on its Instagram page.
John C. Hartsock
John C. Hartsock, Communication Studies Department, has had one of his books translated and published in Romanian. A History of American Literary Journalism was published recently as O Istorie a Jurnalismului Literar American by the Romanian academic press, Institutul European. It was originally published by the University of Massachusetts Press in 2000. The translators of the Romanian edition are Andra Andrei, Ioana Laura Bida, Oana Sîrbu and Dan Stoica. The preface was written by Ilie Rad, professor of journalism at Universitatea Babes-Bolyai in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, who arranged for the translation.
In other news, Hartsock gave a paper, “Negotiating Cultural and Personal Revelation in Literary Journalism and Memoir,” at the 10th annual conference of the International Association for Literary Journalism Studies at the University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis Campus.
Maaike Oldemans and Jennifer Kronenbitter
Maaike Oldemans and Jennifer Kronenbitter, Memorial Library, presented at the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians Conference 2017 in May at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio. They presented “Technical Metamorphosis by Design.”
Bonni C. Hodges and Mike Urtz
Bonni C. Hodges, Health Department, and Mike Urtz, Athletics Department, conducted a webinar for the Society for Public Health Education titled “Student Athlete Wellbeing: One Team, One Family, Many Branches.” The webinar provided an overview of student-athlete wellbeing challenges, current student-athlete wellbeing initiatives in the U.S., and a process used to plan future student-athlete wellbeing initiatives at SUNY Cortland.
John Suarez
John Suarez, Institute for Civic Engagement, participated in a planning meeting on Aug. 2 of the newly-formed “Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania.” Participants identified priorities and resources that the new organization can help them with as they work on projects such as data collection and assessment.
Also, Suarez’s article on the Institute’s Action Team was published in the August 2018 issue of Umbrella, the SUNY System’s Applied Learning newsletter. The article describes ways in which the Action Team’s interns built the Institute’s capacity through their entrepreneurial spirit.

Jordan Kobritz
Jordan Kobritz, Sport Management Department, and his co-authors recently had two articles published on the state of labor negotiations in the National Hockey League. “Don Fehr Trades His Ball For A Puck: Will He Continue To Score?” was published in the Villanova Sport & Entertainment Law Journal. “Trying His Luck at Puck: Examining the MLBPA’s History to Determine Don Fehr’s Motivation for Agreeing to Lead the NHLPA and Predicting How He Will Fare” was published in the Denver Sports and Entertainment Law Journal.
Sam Avery
Sam Avery, MFA, Communication and Media Studies Department, made a short film, “The Catch”, which won Best New York Short at the Adirondack Film Festival before airing on Mountain Lake PBS. The film features David Hollenback, Communication and Media Studies Department, and recent SUNY Cortland alumnus, Mitchell Ensman ’17.
