Kate McCormick

Kate McCormick, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, co-authored an article published in the Journal of Research in Childhood Education titled, “Early childhood professional well-being as a predictor of risk of turnover in child care: A matter of quality.” The article describes the relationship between early childhood educator’s risk of leaving their positions and their sense of well-being.

Nance Wilson

Nance Wilson, Literacy Department, presented “Teacher Candidates: Teaching and Learning with Technology to Improve Literacy Skills and Practices” at the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers Annual conference held in November in Costa Mesa, Calif. Also, Wilson co-authored an article titled “Reading, Writing and the Common Core Standards,” that was published in the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) Magazine.

Kristine Newhall

Kristine Newhall, Kinesiology Department, co-authored a chapter in the edited collection LGBT Athletes in the Sports Media from Palgrave Macmillan (Dec. 2018). The chapter, “Out of the Frame: How Sports Media Shapes Trans Narratives,” analyzes media coverage of transgender participation in sports and discusses how the constructed narratives narrowly shape cultural understandings of trans athletes. 

Patricia Roiger

Patricia Roiger, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, presented “Toddler Tales: Mothering Toddlers Brings Challenges and Pleasures Like Nothing Else. Tips, Tricks and Strategies to Navigate Gentle Discipline, Extended Nursing, Weaning and More” at the New York State La Leche League Conference, held Nov.7-9 in Syracuse, N.Y.

Philip Buckenmeyer

Philip Buckenmeyer, Kinesiology Department, led seven kinesiology students in a Healthy Now project that culminated with a Wellness Day event at the Barry School in Cortland on Feb. 12. SUNY Cortland students included Hannah Smith, Jeffrey Koch, Theodore Kopytowski, Michael Grieco, Lauren Guardino, Erin Kelly and Ayden Wilbur. The Barry School children learned about their flexibility and range of motion by practicing four different exercises that focused on the hips, neck, back and shoulders.

Melissa Morris

Melissa Morris, Physics Department, coauthored a paper titled “Planetary Embryo Bow Shocks as a Mechanism for Chondrule Formation,” that was accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal.  

Also, Morris was formally appointed as adjunct faculty in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University, facilitating her ongoing collaborations with this major research university.

Melissa A. Morris

Melissa A. Morris, Physics Department, had her NASA proposal titled “Chondrule Formation in Impact Plumes” selected for funding in the amount of $330,000 for 2014-16. Her joint publication, “Overcoming the Meter Barrier and the Formation of Systems with Tightly Packed Inner Planets (STIPs),” was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters in September. Also, Morris attended the Circumstellar Disks and Planet Formation Conference Oct. 12-14 at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, has been named the new editor of the Presidential Briefings book series, published by Transaction Books. The books in the series provide concise and readable introductions to topics of general interest to students of the presidency. By approaching their subjects from the vantage point of what a president most needs to know, and what we most need to know about the presidency, each book provides a highly practical overview of an important subject. The first book in the series will be published this summer.

Sonia Sharma

Sonia Sharma, Mathematics Department, presented at the American Mathematical Society (AMS) Contributed Session on “C*-algebras and Analysis” at the annual Joint Mathematical Meeting held in January in Baltimore, Md.

Ryan Vooris and Kerry Fischer

Ryan Vooris and Kerry Fischer, Sport Management Department, traveled to Cozumel, Mexico, to present their research at the 2018 Global Sport Business Conference. Their presentation was titled “Observing the second-screen effect: Use of an experiment to measure distracted viewing, social context, and sponsorship recall among NBA viewers.”
