Art and Art History Department

The Art and Art History department offers degrees in Studio Art (BA, BFA) and Art History (BA). Our classes are led by dedicated and experienced faculty in studios designed for sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, two-dimensional design, printmaking, weaving, surface design, graphic design and digital media, and courses in art history that broadly address the socio-political stakes of cultural production.

Students graduating from our programs are well prepared for a wide range of careers in the fields of art and design by developing the vital critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for a professional career in the arts.

In addition to a dynamic classroom and studio culture, our department offers numerous opportunities for enhanced experiential learning, including semesterly field trips to major museum collections, arts-related work-study opportunities, and several study abroad programs.

The Dowd Gallery on campus provides a deeper level of engagement with artwork through a lively program of exhibitions and screenings, artist talks, and panel discussions by visiting artists and scholars in the field of art and art history, as well as offering students the opportunity to gain valuable curatorial and exhibition experience through shows like the annual Student Select.
