If a student with a disability wishes to request accessible campus housing or other accommodations involving housing, please submit a New Student Accessibility Request with the Disability Resources Office. Students already affiliated with Disability Resources may submit a Supplemental Request in AccessCortland. Any information regarding the disability will remain private.
Students with requests for the fall semester will need to meet a Feb. 26 deadline for returning students and a June 15 deadline for incoming students. Those requesting accommodations for the spring will need to meet a Dec.1 deadline for returning students and a Dec. 31 deadline for incoming students. Students must submit a request and schedule an appointment with the Disability Resources Office before the pertinent deadline. Any requests made after the deadline may be placed on a wait list and cannot be guaranteed.
Students with disabilities who have been approved by SUNY Cortland's Disability Resources Office to receive accessible housing will receive any accommodations at the standard double room rate or the West Campus Apartments rate, regardless of the differential room rate of their housing assignment. Accommodations may include wheelchair accessible single rooms with wheelchair accessible private bathrooms, wheelchair accessible rooms, air-conditioned rooms, single rooms, and rooms with semi-private or private bathrooms. These rooms are available in limited quantities. Students may also request to live with their emotional support or assistance animal.
Steps for students to request a housing accommodation
- Submit a New Student Accessibility Request with Disability Resources. Students already affiliated with Disability Resources submit a Supplemental Request in AccessCortland instead.
- Documentation is not required to begin the process. But if you wish to support your request by providing information directly from a medical or mental health care provider or another advocate, please download the Accessible Campus Housing Request form in PDF or fillable Word format. The top of the form is to be filled out by the student and the rest by their provider or advocate. Once complete, submit it to the Disability Resources Office.
- The Disability Resources Office will review the request and may reach out to schedule a meeting with the student. Disability Resources will determine if the student has a disability-specific need and how SUNY Cortland can best provide the student with equal access. A disability is defined as a condition that substantially limits one or more major life functions. Disability Resources will provide a response to the student and communicate any approved accommodations to the Residence Life and Housing Office.
- If applicable, Residence Life and Housing will let the student know whether they will be assigned in a location that meets the student’s accessible campus housing request or Residence Life and Housing will let the student know if their name is on a waiting list. Housing assignments for new students for the fall semester are posted on myRedDragon on Aug. 1.
