Dennis Weng

Dennis Weng, Political Science Department, presented three papers at a conference at The University of Texas at Austin from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1. His paper “Contextual Effects on individual Voting Behavior: the Case of Taiwan,” has been accepted for publication in the Asian Journal of Political Science by the end of this year. 

Lin Lin

Lin Lin, Childhood and Early Childhood Education Department, presented at the National Council for the Social Studies annual convention on Nov. 21 in Boston, Mass. Her presentation was titled “Chinese History Teachers (ir)Responsive Instruction after September 11, 2001.”

Sam Avery

Sam Avery, Communication and Media Studies Department, was awarded grand prize for best short film at the Snowtown Film Festival on Jan. 26 in Watertown, N.Y. His short film, “DEADEYE” tells the story of an aging female boxer whose spirit rages despite the torments of society and a manager who won’t return calls. Over 200 film fans and filmmakers attended the fifth annual festival Jan. 25 and 26. The winter celebration of film concluded on Saturday evening with an award ceremony and presentation of the grand prize for best short film. More than 500 films were submitted for competition from eleven countries. Awards were also presented to student filmmakers, outstanding comedy and outstanding animated shorts and winter through film. The festival also included a script writing competition. Snowtown Film Festival will begin accepting submissions for next year’s festival this spring. Avery directs the Blackbird Film Festival, which will be held on campus April 26 to 28.

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of the new eighth edition of his book, The Politics of Gun Control, just published by Routledge. First published in 1995, the book has become the standard in the field and is widely cited and used across several fields of study.

Matt Madden, Mark Dodds and Kate Polasek

Matt Madden, Physical Education Department, Mark Dodds, Sport Management Department, and Kate Polasek, Kinesiology Department, presented “Female rights to physical education in the United States and the interpretation of co-educational classes” at the European Association for Sport Management Conference, held Sept. 5 to 8 in Innsbruck, Austria.

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of an article titled “Separating Truth and Myth in the American Gun Debate,” published in the Fall 2013 issue of The Islamic Monthly.

Melinda Shimizu

Melinda Shimizu, Geography Department, had an article titled “Design a Children’s Map—Competition Edition!” published in March in The Geography Teacher.

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of a book chapter titled “The Five Rules of Trump” for a new book on the Trump presidency, Presidential Leadership and the Trump Presidency, published by Palgrave Macmillan.

 

David A. Kilpatrick

David A. Kilpatrick, professor emeritus of psychology, was invited by the National Association of School Psychologists to present two half-day workshops for their annual conference in New Orleans on Friday, Feb. 16. The workshops were titled “Intervention-Oriented Assessment of Reading Difficulties” and “Interventions for Difficulties with Word Identification, Fluency and Reading Comprehension.” In addition, he participated in a research presentation, “Exploring Reading Fluency as a Function of the Orthographic Lexicon” with co-presenters Michelle Storie, Ph.D., from SUNY Oswego, Vincent Alfonzo, Ph.D. from Montclair University and Daniel Hajovsky, Ph.D. from Texas A&M.

Heather Bartlett, Ross Borden, Jack Carr, Mary Lynch Kennedy, Christine Lemchak, Deborah Rogers and Anne Wiegard

English Department faculty members Heather Bartlett, Ross Borden, Jack Carr, Mary Lynch Kennedy, Christine Lemchak, Deborah Rogers and Anne Wiegard completed an intensive, week-long media literacy course in August at Project Look Sharp at Ithaca College. They received training in the theory and practice of media literacy, learned applications for digital technology and developed media literacy projects for their courses.
