Sebastian Purcell
Sebastian Purcell, Philosophy Department, presented a paper titled “Decolonial Socialism” at the American Philosophical Association 116th Annual Meeting held Feb. 21 in Denver, Colo. Also, he has been invited to present his paper titled “Phronesis and Ixtlamatiliztli: Aristotle and the Aztecs on Practical Wisdom” on March 18 at Princeton University in New Jersey.
Alexandru Balas
Alexandru Balas, International Studies Department and director of the Clark Center for International Education, gave a presentation titled “When Good People Do Something: The Actions of Two Romanians and a Salvadoran During the Holocaust” as part of the Conversations in Conflict Studies Series at the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Cooperation. The series was held on Feb. 6 at Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, has had his 2015 book, Guns across America, reviewed in the New York Review of Books, along with a letter exchange with the reviewer in a subsequent issue. Alexandru Balas
Alexandru Balas, International Studies Department and Clark Center for Global Engagement, co-authored a book, The Puzzle of Peace: The Evolution of Peace in the International System that was selected as the 2017 winner of the J. David Singer Book Award by the International Studies Association-Midwest. Also, the book was one of seven finalists for American Political Science Association’s 2017 Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award for the best book on government, politics, or international affairs. It was co-authored with Paul Diehl and Gary Goertz and published in New York by Oxford University Press, 2016.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of an article appearing at the CNN website titled, “Trump Should Seize This Pivotal Moment and Stop Waffling on Gun Control.” The article was posted on August 24.
Doug Langhans
Doug Langhans, Admissions Office, recently attended the European Association for International Education (EAIE) 2017 Conference in Seville, Spain. He represented Study New York, a consortium of SUNY, CUNY and private institutions formed to promote New York as a destination for international students. Langhans, Study New York chair-elect, exhibited at the conference in conjunction with EducationUSA. He met with a variety of international education colleagues to discuss the advantages of studying in New York.
Daniela Baban Hurrle
Daniela Baban Hurrle, International Programs Office, was awarded the Clark Center Internationalization Award on April 27. Since 2010, the Clark Center Internationalization Award is given each year at SUNY Cortland to recognize individuals from the faculty or staff who have significantly contributed to or shown leadership in internationalizing the campus.
In selecting an honoree, the Clark Center Steering Committee recognizes the variety of ways an individual can enrich SUNY Cortland and the wider community. Recognized activities include, for example, expanding study abroad opportunities or mentoring international students on campus. Awardees have also repeatedly exposed SUNY Cortland students to a diversity of international perspectives, whether by presenting their scholarship, bringing guest scholars to campus, promoting the study of foreign languages, or diversifying our curriculum.

Tiantian Zheng
Tiantian Zheng, Sociology/Anthropology Department, was invited by University of Las Vegas to deliver a campus-wide book talk on Nov. 13 on her book Tongzhi Living: Men Attracted to Men in Postsocialist China.
James Webb
James Webb, Auxiliary Services Corporation (ASC), has been awarded the title of certified executive chef by the American Culinary Federation. This certification comes at the end of an intensive training process. Some of the requirements are completion of courses in food safety, supervisory management, a written and practical examination and more than five years as a supervisory chef.
Webb has been with ASC since 2010. He led the culinary effort during the New York Jets training camp and has been instrumental in the development of many of ASC’s newer concepts like Pomodori and Greens & Grains. Webb is the executive chef at The Bistro in the Student Life Center and will now serve as ASC Dining’s senior executive chef.
Tadayuki Suzuki
Tadayuki Suzuki, Literacy Department, had his article, “Realities of War: Using Picture Books to Teach the Social Effects of Armed Conflicts,” published in the Multicultural Education Magazine in August. He coauthored this article with Barbara Fiehn, Jeanine Huss, and Roxanne Spencer at Western Kentucky University.
